Kobe earthquake shatters faith in engineers

Article Abstract:

The complacency of civil engineers in Japan is alleged to be the cause of the collapse of multi-storey buildings, highways and railway lines during the Kobe earthquake. Japanese civil engineers, confident of the building standards used in Japan, were ill-prepared for the sudden quake which caused the collapse of the crucial Hanshin expressway. The collapse of the highways has disrupted the government's relief efforts and supply routes for the industry.

Australia backs innovation, shuns telescope

Article Abstract:

Australia has decided to back domestic scientific development and concentrate its technological interests in the Asia-Pacific region instead of supporting Western projects such as the European Southern Observatory's proposed Very Large Telescope in Chile. Analysts suspect political compulsions behind this move by Prime Minister Paul Keating, with the imminent general elections in mind.
