Magnetic compass and learning of the Y-axis (sea-land) direction in the marine isopod Idotea baltica basteri
Article Abstract:
Experiments on marine isopod Idotea baltica reveal that it employs the earth's magnetic field to find the direction corresponding to the Y-axis of its home beach when no other hints are present. If this magnetic compass mechanism cannot be utilized, the animal can learn other theoretical escape mechanism such as solar orientation. Other local clues such as ground elevation can also be used.

Development of the navigational map in homing pigeons: effects of flight experience on orientation performance
Article Abstract:
Navigational capabilities of homing pigeons were experimented by rearing them in wind-screened aviaries. It was found that pigeons reared in a wind-screened aviary developed navigational abilities if, once adult, they were allowed to perform spontaneous flights around the loft.

Relationship between compass systems of orientation in equatorial sandhoppers
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the influence of the magnetic compass and the sun compass in the equatorial sandhopper's zonal orientation. The relationship between the two compass systems is discussed.
