Making light work of adaptation

Article Abstract:

Reef-building corals are distinguished by their algal symbionts living within their tissues. They are vulnerable to human-induced stress, leading to bleaching which is sometimes fatal. Current research shows that some symbiotic corals are communities and that the levels of light available in the microenvironment control the distribution of the various plant taxa. The discovery of many labile symbioses, emphasises the role of acclimatization and adaptation.

Calcification and CO2

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the effects of rising concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere on the development of coral reefs and coccolithophorids. These structures are important producers of calcium carbonate.

Reduced calcification of marine plankton in response to increased atmospheric CO2

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the reduced calcification in coralline macroalgae, coral reefs and planktonic organisms which has occurred as carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have risen.
