Fast heating of ultrahigh-density plasma as a step towards laser fusion ignition

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to link production of compressed matter in a laser-driven implosion with picosecond-fast heating by a laser pulse timed to align with the peak compression. This method allows efficient compression and heating to be undertaken at the same time, forming the basis for efficient fusion energy production.

Manoenergetic beams of relativistic electrons from intense laser-plasma interactions

Article Abstract:

High-resolution energy measurements of the electron beams produced from intense laser-plasma interaction are reported, which show that it is possible to generate beams of relativistic electrons with low divergence and a small energy spread under particular plasma conditions. The monoenergetic features were observed in the electron energy spectrum for plasma densities above a threshold required for breaking of the plasma wave.

Plasma devices to guide and collimate a high density of MeV electrons

Article Abstract:

High-conductivity devices consisting of transient plasmas that increase the energy density of MeV electron generated in laser-matter interactions by more than one order of magnitude are reported. It is observed that a plasma fiber created on a hollow-cone target guides and collimates electrons in a manner akin to the control of light by an optimal fiber and collimator.
