Melvin Calvin (1911-97)
Article Abstract:
Melvin Calvin received his BS degree in chemistry at the Michigan College of Science and Technology. He joined the chemistry department of the University of California in Berkeley after he earned his Phd at the University of Minnesota. His works include research on the biochemical basis of photosynthesis and the biochemistry of learning. He won the Nobel prize for chemistry in 1961 for his work on the path of carbon in photosynthesis. Calvin was also a member of Pres. Kennedy's Science Advisory Committee.

Norman Pirie (1907-97)
Article Abstract:
Biochemist Norman Pirie was highly respected for his in-depth knowledge of scientific discovery and etymology. His research work initially focused on the nature of plant viruses, but he later investigated extracted leaf protein, promoting it as a supplementary human food. His work was recognized in a number of different ways, but he was particularly gratified to be awarded the Rank Prize for Nutrition in 1976. He led an extremely simple life, and worked very long hours every day of the year.

Jeff Schell
Article Abstract:
The pioneer of plant genetic engineering, Jeff Schell has passed away. Mr. Schell has created the first genetically modified plants which expressed a new trait.
