Mice lacking bombesin receptor subtype-3 develop metabolic defects and obesity
Article Abstract:
Bombesin-like peptides in mammals are distributed widely throughout the central nervous system and i the gastrointestinal tract. Bombesin-like peptide receptors such as gastrin-releasing peptide receptor, neuromedin B receptor and bombesin receptor subtype-3 (BRS-3) have been cloned. BRS-3-deficient mice have been generated to identify the in vivo function of the receptor. Mice without functional BRS-3 developed obesity linked with hypertension, and showed reduced metabolic rate.

Role of melanocortinergic neurons in feeding and the 'agouti' obesity syndrome
Article Abstract:
Melanocortinergic neurons have been found to inhibit feeding behavior. This finding was determined when an MC3-R/MC4-R antagonist specifically induced hyperphagia. A related study of mice also suggests that obesity in the C57BL/6J-A mouse results from the cumulative effect of chronic antagonism of MC4-R signalling in the brain by 'agouti' peptide which serves as a paracrine factor in regulating eumelanin synthesis and in inducting obesity.

Medicinal strategies in the treatment of obesity
Article Abstract:
There is a pressing need for more drugs that are safe in the treatment of obesity. Scientists must seek to identify the major pathways where pharmacological intervention can be effective in assisting people who are clinically overweight.
