Middle East synchrotron facility could bring regional cooperation
Article Abstract:
Plans to establish a joint synchrotron radiation facility are to be discussed in Paris by scientists and science administrators from the Middle East, Europe, and the US and the Far East. It would be the first regional centre for basic research cooperation in the Middle East, and it is likely that Germany may present Middle East scientists with BESSY-1, a 0.8 GeV synchrotron radiation source. The aim is to attract scientists from the US and Europe to the area and encourage Middle East scientists who have left to work abroad, back to the area.

Synchrotron beamlines open as plans are laid for repairs
Article Abstract:
Two beamlines of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France will go into operation in Nov 1992 while directors struggle to correct defects in the building's concrete floor. The beams will provide data on crystallography and on the analysis of small amounts of rare substances. A third beam with many uses will begin working later in Nov 1992. Problems with ESRF's floor arise from the vibration and alluvial rock that characterize the site on which the $600 million project is constructed.

A gamma-ray burst with a high-energy spectral component inconsistent with the synchrotron shock model
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on gamma-ray bursts which release their energy as photons. The authors report the observation of high-energy spectral component in the burst which differs from the earlier observed lower-energy gamma-ray component.
