Minding the gap

Article Abstract:

The potential use of photonic crystals in the optoelectronics industry was presented at a symposium during the American Physical Society's meeting in San Jose, CA, from Mar. 20-24, 1995. Photonic crystals are perfectly periodic and intricate dielectric structures that are designed to prevent light that falls within the photonic bandgap from reaching the crystals' interior unless a defect is introduced to trap light. This localization of light is useful for designing microphotonic elements used in optoelectronic integrated circuits.

Metal-insulator-semiconductor optoelectronic fibres

Article Abstract:

A brief report on the design, fabrication, and characterization of fibres made of conducting, semi conducting, and insulating materials in intimate contact and in a variety of geometries is described. Demonstrating that this approach can be used to construct a tunable fibre photodetector comprising an amorphous semiconductor core contacted by metallic microwires, and surrounded by a cylindrical-shell resonant optical cavity.
