Missing links in angiogenesis

Article Abstract:

E-selectin and the vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) appear to control the adhesion of leukocytes to the endothelium of postcapillary venules which, in many inflammatory diseases, may precede angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels. Antibodies against E-selectin and VCAM-1 decrease the angiogenic activity of these substances. Angiogenesis probably involves the recruitment of surrounding endothelial cells by E-selectin or VCAM-1 which are released from endothelial cells containing already adhered leukocytes. However, the angiogenesis in rheumatoid arthritis is not only due to these soluble adhesion molecules as their effect is temporally and spatially segregated.

Beta-amyloid-mediated vasoactivity and vascular endothelial damage

Article Abstract:

Beta-amyloid plays a normal role in vasoactivity. However, such vasoactive role occurred only in the presence of endothelium, indicating that the action is endothelium-mediated. These were gleaned from an examination of the relationship between beta-amyloid peptides and oxygen radical formation in endothelium-mediated vasoactivity. A mechanism by which beta-amyloid may be involved in vascular abnormalities and neurodegeneration mediated by free radicals was also noted.
