The role of migratory waterfowl as nutrient vectors in a managed wetland
Article Abstract:
Migratory waterfowl are significant vectors in contributing nutrients to wetlands. A study conducted at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico showed migratory geese in the winter of 1995-1996 supplied approximately 40% of the nitrogen and 75% of the phosphorus to the wetlands used for geese roosting. Management of waterfowl and the nutrients they bring to a wetland will remain as an important issue for wetlands and, ultimately, farmlands.
