Molecular phylogenetics and the origins of placental mammals

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the molecular phylogenetic analysis of 64 species of placental mammals which were sampled from all extant orders. The sequence variation of 18 homologous gene segments were analyzed.

Mesozoic origin for West Indian insectivores

Article Abstract:

The highly endangered solenodons, endemic to Cuba (solenodon cubanus) and Hispaniola (s. Paradoxus) comprise the only two surviving species of West Indian insectivores. A study is conducted to examine the origin and its relationship to other mammals with the help of sequenced portions of 16 nuclear and three mitochondrial genes.

Ancestral primate viewed

Article Abstract:

New studies compare the genome maps and chromosomes of 15 species of primate using the non-primate orders of carnivores, rodents, artiodactyls and tree shrews, as a reference standard. Available data reconstructs chromosomal characteristics from the ancestor of all primates, and affirm that neither the positions of chromosomal breaks nor the evolutionary rate of rearrangements in primates appear to follow predictable patterns.
