Motherhood improves learning and memory

Article Abstract:

Pregnancy and a litter of pups may unite to boost spatial learning and memory in female rats. Hormone-induced changes in the hippocampus may boost the navigation abilities involved in parental resource-gathering behaviours. Concurrent changes in both the hippocampus and the medial preoptic area could play a role in the clear behavioural transition seen in maternal females. The sensory stimulation associated with having pups may have an impact on brain structure and function similar to that prompted by other forms of enriched physical environment.
