Autocorrelation of location estimates and the analysis of radiotracking data

Article Abstract:

Radiotagged animals often provide data on locations for assessing boundaries of home ranges as well as testing ideas on habitat selection. The home range definition should include a temporal component that is prespecified, and there should be a proper sampling design in order to identify a sample of locations that is representative, in this period of time. Locations should not be used as sample units in place of individuals, when techniques for analyzing habitat selection are being developed.

Mule deer survival in Colorado, Idaho, and Montana

Article Abstract:

Research in Colorado, Idaho and Montana into the survival rates of mule deer fawns and adult females indicates that spatial and temporal variations in mule deer population dynamics are affected by a number of different factors. Basic population performance was similar across all three states, even though there was diversity in mule deer habitats between the states. Year-to-year variation was the main source of variation in both fawn and adult female survival rates.

Mule deer survival in Colorado, Idaho, and Montana

Article Abstract:

The survival rates of mule deer fawns and adult females were examined to determine the effect of survival on population dynamics over a broad geographic location. To this end, survival rates were estimated from 1,875 radiocollared fawns and 1,536 radiocollared adult female-years. Substantial year-to-year differences in overwinter survival rates of fawns among states were found while those of adult females exhibited less variation across years.
