Multiplicity of migrants

Article Abstract:

EC legislation governing the migration of potentially toxic contaminants from food packaging to food needs a more workable strategy. The EC's effort at subjecting every such contaminant or migrant to toxicity testing is impractical since over 10,000 migrants have been detected. The quantitative structure-activity relationship approach, which determines toxicity based on analysis of chemical structure, and the total extractables approach, by which solvents remove the migrants for testing, are probably the most feasible techniques on which to base legislation.

EC plans encryption rules in a bid to police information superhighway

Article Abstract:

The European Commission is legislating to keep a check on activities of the Internet and stop its illegal use. Activities such as spread of pornography and unauthorized release of classified documents are to be curbed. The legislation could include giving investigating agencies the right to search computer networks and take any illegal material. The legislation would restrict free flow of information on the net in the 15 member states.

Support for scientific evaluation of homeopathy stirs controversy

Article Abstract:

The EC's study on the efficacy of homeopathic therapy has fomented strong debate in Europe. The study concluded that there was no valid reason for exempting homeopath from conventional scientific rules of clinical and preclinical evaluation. Many European pharmacological and medical experts contend that subjecting homeopathy to such evaluations would be fruitless and a waste of money.
