Mutual policing and repression of competition in the evolution of cooperative groups
Article Abstract:
A model based on the cost of competition within a group shows that mutual policing and high kin-selection coefficient of relatedness increase cooperation, leading to the development of complex social structures. Policing decreases competition by increasing kin-selection coefficient. As the kin-selection coefficient of relatedness in group members decreases, competition increases. Although competition between members of the same group for limited resources benefits the stronger members, it decreases the fitness of the entire group.

Population density drives the local evolution of a threshold dimorphism
Article Abstract:
The threshold evolution in forceps dimorphism of Forficula auricularia is shown. The transition from completely monomorphic to classical maledimorphic populations over a distance of only 40 km is also documented.

Concurrent density dependence and independence in populations of arctic ground squirrels
Article Abstract:
A density-perturbation experiment on arctic ground squirrels is used to show density-dependent convergence of increased populations in comparison to control populations kept at lower, stable levels.
