NIH backers take Clinton to task over impact of budget pact
Article Abstract:
US National Institutes of Health (NIH) will receive 1.2% more funding in 1998 than in 1997 under the budget agreed by President Bill Clinton, but NIH supporters claim biomedical inflation will rise 3.1%. Clinton failed to classify biomedical research as a protected area of public spending and NIH supporters are disappointed it is not being given priority treatment despite Clinton's publicly-announced support. Clinton asked for a 2.6% funding increase for biomedical research in his Feb 1997 formal budget request.

NIH streamlines research grants process
Article Abstract:
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has approved a new procedure for research grant applications, requiring budgets to be based on multiples of $25,000. Such a modular grant format aims to keep the focus mainly on the science. There are concerns that the $25,000 increments may tempt applicants to round their costs upwards, but the NIH will be looking out for any applications that appear inflated.
