NIH, under fire, freezes grant for conference on genetics and crime

Article Abstract:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) delayed financing of a conference on the connection between genetics and crime after minority groups denounced the meeting as an indirect insult to African-Americans who comprise 46% of the prison population. The University of Maryland's Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy wants to sponsor the conference, called 'Genetic Factors in Crime: Findings, Uses and Implications' with the aid of a $100,000 NIH grant. NIH director Bernadine Healy instructed conference organizer David Wasserman to expand the conference's scope.

NSF will experiment with fixed budgets in an effort to simplify grants process

Article Abstract:

The National Science Foundation (NSF) on Oct 1, 1992 will begin trying out a new process for distributing research grants to mathematicians. Under the new process, applicants will not have to include a proposed budget when asking for funds and will be awarded grants at fixed, predetermined amounts. NSF wants to find out if these experimental procedures will rectify the complexities that have vexed the grant approval process in the past. NSF will continue with this test at least for the duration of FY 1993.
