Neck bans reduce survival of Canada geese in New Jersey

Article Abstract:

Neck bands are widely used to monitor goose populations in North America, even though there has long been controversy about the impact of neck bands on geese. Recent research has looked at the effect of neck banks on the survival and recovery rates of Canada geese breeding in New Jersey. It was found that there were no differences in survival rates between adult and young birds, but that there were differences between geese which were legbanded and geese which were both leg- and neckbanded. It was found that neckbands should be used with caution, as is cannot be proved that they do not influence survival rates.

Effects of saline drinking water on early gosling development

Article Abstract:

Canada geese can show high variations in fledging rates, and one factors that can affect the rates is the salinity of water available to goslings for drinking. Research in western Utah has investigated the impact of salinity on goslings, and has found that high salinity is linked to depressed growth levels and increased mortality. This could be a more serious problem for birds in the wild, which are more likely to be affected by variations in food quality and other environmental stresses.

Distinguishing migratory and resident Canada Geese using stable isotope analysis

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the use of stable sulfur, carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis of feather tissue to distinguish between resident and migrant populations of Canada Geese. The accuracy of the analysis is discussed.
