Need for change in Japan's universities: Japan's universities need strong leadership to give young scientists, foreign staff and women the opportunities that are denied them
Article Abstract:
Japanese universities have been criticised for their discrimination against foreigners seeking tenure status. There has also been criticism over sex discrimination and of discrimination against young scientists. Japanese universities do not have strong leadership and their infrastructure is generally of lower quality than European or US universities. It is likely that any radical reforms would be opposed by some faculty members, but there is a need to consider affirmative action programmes to increase the number of foreigners and women as tenured faculty members.

Asbestos removal spells upheaval for Paris scientists
Article Abstract:
French President Jacques Chirac's announcement of asbestos contamination at the Jussieu campus has impelled the appointment of a Jussieu Mission Committee to plan the clean-up operations. Removal of asbestos from 220,000 square meters of teaching and research facilities at Jussieu is proposed in stages with priority being accorded to checking the release of asbestos dust. The decontamination operation is the first of its kind in France and expected to cost approximately FF2 billion.
