New Zealand's universities face 'privatization' bid

Article Abstract:

Academics in New Zealand and abroad are expressing strong opposition to government plans to make universities into private bodies. The main area of conflict is a proposal to convert the management of New Zealand's universities from self-governing councils, which have significant academic representation, into companies controlled by boards appointed by government to ensure that the universities meet national targets. Academics believe that this approach would be seen as undermining the autonomy of universities.

Mixed reaction to New Zealand reforms

Article Abstract:

Polytechnics and government-owned Crown Research Institutes in New Zealand have welcomed the recently announced overhaul of university funding, but university leaders and researchers have criticised the proposals. Certain controversial proposals from the 1997 green paper have been watered down by education minister and deputy prime minister in the National Party minority government, Wyatt Creech. Overall financial control will be retained by Creech, although substantial funding will be moved from universities to polytechnics.
