Nigeria ready for huge science spend

Article Abstract:

Nigeria's scientific research base is set to undergo a dramatic transformation as the government is considering creating a US$5-billlion endowment fund for science and technology that is expected to generate a research and development budget on a par with many developed nations. The funds generated from the endowment fund would be channeled into areas like agricultural biotechnology, information technology and satellite launch systems, which Nigeria has already identified as priority areas.

Atomic agency launches bid to bank nuclear fuel

Article Abstract:

International Atomic Energy Agency has taken a step towards persuading countries to give up control of the nuclear fuel and hence, United States, and Russia have agreed to contribute to the international fuel bank. The first stage will make way to bring the entire nuclear-fuel cycle under multilateral control, where the bank will help dissuade nuclear-hungry nations from developing facilities to enrich uranium.

Study links sickness to Russian launch site

Article Abstract:

The rocket launches in Kazakhstan are causing serious illness among people living near the take-off site. Highly toxic fuel from spent rocket stages causes some serious health problems and it is found that the level of some diseases, such as endocrine and blood disorders, in polluted areas is more than twice the regional average.
