Noxious compounds activate TRPA1 ion channels through covalent modification of cysteines

Article Abstract:

The click chemistry is used to show that derivatives of mustard oil and cinnamaldehyde have covalently bound mouse TRPA1, a member of the Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) family of ion-channels expressed in nociceptive neurons. The results have shown that covalent modification of reactive cysteines within TRPA1 can cause channel activation, which has signalled potential tissue damage through the pain pathway.

Making connections

Article Abstract:

Cell signalling research aims to understand how cells convert extracellular signals into the required cellular responses, and how these pathways can go awry and cause disease. Technological innovations in detecting and studying protein-protein interactions provide new ways of doing research in cell signalling.
