Nuclear waste peer review 'needs more transparency.'
Article Abstract:
Nirex, the UK agency responsible for nuclear waste disposal, has been urged to allow independent scrutiny of its peer-review procedures to increase public understanding of and confidence in its activities. Scientists at the Radioactive Waste Management Advisory Committee, which advises the UK government on radioactive waste management, called for increased transparency and an independent assessment of the agency's research, citing a persistent perception that the review panel is not fully independent from Nirex.

Highbrow 'club' seeks the common touch
Article Abstract:
The director of the Royal Institution, Susan Greenfield is planning to make major changes so that the Royal Institution is seen as a place than explains to every sector of society, rather than just the middle classes. Some modernization was begun by Peter Day, Greenfield's predecessor, who encouraged the weekend master classes and an outreach program. Greenfield also wants to encourage women to return to science after having children, and is keen to establish awards for science teachers.

UK eyes social goals for next Foresight
Article Abstract:
The UK government has introduced a national consultation for the second phase of the Technology Foresight initiative. This phase will begin in Oct 1998 and run until Nov 2000. The key element of the second phase is addressing social policy priorities. The word 'technology' is being dropped, reflecting the desire to broaden Foresight's remit. Some observers believe that the new emphasis on social issues could damage technology and wealth creation.
