Of dusty tori and black holes

Article Abstract:

A massive black hole in the center of the NGC4258 galaxy has been discovered. The water maser and rotating gas emission from the central region of NGC4258 were observed. The observations and the spectral lines indicate the existence of large masers which can only be a black hole. These observations were conducted using very-long-baseline interferometry to study the megamaser characteristics.

Imaging black holes

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the development of X-ray interferometry in a space telescope due for launch around 2015. The telescope will study black holes and will have angular resolution 1,000 times greater than existing telescopes.

Correlated fast X-ray and optical variability in the black-hole candidate XTE J118+480

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning optical observations which were carried out simultaneously with high-time-resolution X-ray observations on XTE J118+480, a black-hole candidate. The correlation between the emissions is discussed.
