Oil spill fouls wildlife refuge
Article Abstract:
The oil spill caused by the North Cape barge of the tug Scandia on Jan. 19, 1996, has resulted in extensive damage to marine life and has threatened the habitat of migratory birds in the Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge. Long-term impacts on the breeding of the endangered piping plover are being analysed. This includes monitoring the nests, feeding behavior, predation, chick foraging behavior and fledgling success. A decrease in the intertidal prey source areas due to oil contamination may harm plover reproduction and survival.
