Ozone depletion in the upper stratosphere estimated from satellite and Space Shuttle data
Article Abstract:
Ozone loss in the upper stratosphere 42 kilometers high was found to be 7% plus or minus 2%. This level was determined by combining data obtained by the Shuttle Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet spectrometer on board the Space Shuttle in Oct 1989 with data obtained by NASA's Nimbus-7 satellite in Oct 1980. This combination overcame the instrument degradation that had impaired the satellite data. The detected ozone depletion, though small compared to what has occurred in the lower stratosphere, may affect the atmosphere's radiative characteristics.

Satellite ozone monitoring error
Article Abstract:
The total ozone mapping spectrometer (TOMS) which has been monitoring Earth's ozone layer from the Nimbus-7 satellite since 1978 has developed calibration problems. The world standard ozone spectrophotometer is the Dobson 83 at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii. Data from Dobson 83 and portable spectrophotometers shows that TOMS has been giving consistently high values since early 1992. Thus, the geographical coverage of the spring minimum in 1992 may have been somewhat larger than believed.

Formation of ozone by fireworks
Article Abstract:
Issues are presented concerning the concentrations of ozone which are produced by the action of colour-emitting sparklers during firework displays at Diwali festivities in India. The implications for the ozone layer in the stratosphere are discussed.
