Pancreatic beta-cells are rendered glucose-competent by the insulinotropic hormone glucagon-like peptide-1(7-37)

Article Abstract:

Glucagon-like-peptide-1(7-37) (GLP-1), a hormone, offers promise as a treatment for non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDIM). GLP-1 helps to correct the glucose imbalance that causes NIDDIM by undoing the effects of abnormal glucose signalling on the production of insulin by pancreatic beta-cells. The ability of GLP-1 to render beta-cells resistant to glucose bears out GLP-1's therapeutic effect.

Bruce Merrifield (1921 - 2006): Inventor of solid-phase peptide synthesis

Article Abstract:

Bruce Merrifield, inventor of solid-phase peptide synthesis, was one of the most original scientists of the second half of the 20th century. His invention created a paradigm shift in synthetic chemistry and deeply affected biomedical research and the synthesis was used to make numerous analogues of biologically active peptides.
