Paraflagellar rod is vital for trypanosome motility
Article Abstract:
The African trypanosome protozoan parasite causes sleeping sickness in humans. The paraflagellar rod (PFR) is a large structure containing in the flagellum of the trypanosomes. An antisense RNA approach was used to develop a specific molecular ablation of the structure of the PFR, and it was found that the mutant cells are paralyzed, indicating a crucial role for the PFR in cell motility. It may be indicative of antisense interference with early processing.
