Pattern recognition and active vision in chickens

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to obtain evidence that object recognition in a bird involves recapitulating similar views of objects on different occasions by repeated patterns of locomotion and head movements, and a failure of recognition from other viewpoints. This research used frame-by-frame video analysis of the body and head movements of six freely moving hens discriminating between two stimulus objects for a food reward under three sets of conditions. The eyes of an individual hen followed paths through time, with an individual hen always going around the same side of an object and showing a similar pattern of head movements as it approached an object.
