Patterns of fine root mortality in two sugar maple forests
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted of the mortality of fine root cohorts in two sugar maple forests, one 80 km north of the other. Roots studied in the northern forest lived longer than those of the southern forest as a result of the increased early-life mortality in the southern forest. Since there was no significant differences between the sites in soil matter content, available ions, nitrogen mineralization, soil moisture, growing season, mass of the litterfall or canopy area, the difference was attributed to warmer soil temperatures at the southern site.

Candidate proto-oncogene bcl-3 encodes a subunit-specific inhibitor of transcription factor NF-kappa-B
Article Abstract:
The proto-oncogene bcl-3, thought to be associated with human B-cell leukemias, carries the genetic information for a protein similar to the I-kappa-B molecule for native NF-kappa-B but different in acting only on a bcl-3 subunit, p50. Moreover, the bcl-3 protein's ankyrin repeat domain controls complex formation of NF-kappa-B dimers through contact with the NF-kappa-B's conserved dimerization domain. The research illuminates the unusual transcription and dimerization domain properties of this proto-oncogene.

Intercellular movement of the putative transcription factor SHR in root patterning
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the physiological function of the putative transcription factor, the SHR protein, in signalling which produces cell layer multiplication and cell fate determination in the roots of plants.
