Pleiotropy and henchman X

Article Abstract:

Research suggests that the pleiotropy of the viral transactivator hepatitis B protein X (HBx) results from activation of protein kinase C. Protein kinase C is involved in cellular signal transduction pathways and this may be what prepares the host cell for replication of the hepatitis B genome. However, HBx activates numerous cellular promoters and the wide variety of its function is not fully understood.

Marvels of molecular device

Article Abstract:

Molecular-scale devices are quicker in performance because of their size and short conducting paths which allow signals to travel simultaneously. The faster optical electron processes may not necessarily undermine the future of slower parallel processes. The interest shown by scientists on molecular-scale devices suggests the possibility that the usefulness of these devices will be maintained.

Postmodern complexes

Article Abstract:

Cell-surface cytokine signalling complexes can be studied using the crystal structures of growth hormone (GH) bound to its dimeric receptor complex. The presence of tandem immunoglobulin (Ig)-like modules in binding domains of haematopoietic receptors is shown by the X-ray study of the GH-receptor fold. The four-helical bundle topology of GH is shown by studies of cytokine structures.
