Plight of the paddlefish: human consumption of caviar threatens one of North America's oldest fishes

Article Abstract:

Wildlife biologists fear that harvesting the paddlefish in the Yellowstone River in Montana for caviar is threatening the existence of the species just as sturgeon populations have declined in Russia. Paddlefish are a prehistoric species with a low rate of reproduction. They take 10 years to reach sexual maturity. North Dakota and Montana have imposed quotas to prevent overfishing. Commercial and environmental interests disagree on whether quotas are necessary.
