Population density influences male-male competition in guppies

Article Abstract:

Male-male competition in guppies, Poecilia reticulata, rises as density increases. It has been shown that, as density increases, male courtship displays decrease steadily but male-male interference and mate-searching behaviour rises. Population density alone has no impact on the overall number of copulations, copulatory tactics or on the proportion of postcopulatory mate guarding. It has been confirmed that Paria females prefer males with a high percentage of orange coloration.

The trade-off between foraging and courting in male guppies

Article Abstract:

An expriment exploring the trade-off between foraging and courtship behavior in male guppies, Poecilia reticulata, was conducted using 10 male wild guppies. Results indicate that feeding always occured before courtship and that food supply determines the amount of time spent feeding. Female size did not affect feeding time except for the number of males engaged in courtship behavior.
