Post-prandial chemosensory searching in black rat snakes

Article Abstract:

Laboratory experiments on black rat snakes showed that the animals exhibited increased rates of tongue flicking after ingestion of prey. The behavior, combined with conventional predator searching behavior (PPCS), represents post-prandial chemosensory searching which increased their chances of locating subsequent prey. PPCS can be compared to the strike-induced chemosensory searching (SICS) of venomous snakes. The occurrence of such behaviors on both venomous and non-venomous snakes suggests that PPCS and SICS are ancestral traits.

Chemosensory predator recognition induces specific defensive behaviours in a fossorial amphisbaenian

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the defensive response of the fossorial amphisbaenian Blanus cinereus to its detection of odours from potential predators. The evolutionary advantage of this behaviour is discussed.

Scent matching modulates space use and agonistic behaviour between male snow voles, Chionomys nivalis

Article Abstract:

Male voles are studied for their ability to identify other male voles through smell. Marking their territory is seen to result in fewer incidents of aggression between males, as graphed in the study.
