Prairie restoration in western Washington

Article Abstract:

Washington Department of Natural Resources' Natural Heritage Program has joined forces with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to begin restoring native grasslands at Puget Sound, western Washington. The restoration program requires removal of invasive plants and active management of ecosystem processes, such as fire. One rare plant to be found in the Puget Sound region is the golden paintbrush, a native perennial forb only found in western Washington and southwestern British Columbia. Other western Washington grasslands being regenerated are Fort Casey State Park and Rocky Prairie Natural Area Preserve.

Walker's manioc rediscovered

Article Abstract:

Walker's maniocas, a wine-like subshrub, was thought to be extinct until its rediscovery in 1995 by botanist Tom Patterson at Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Texas. The plant is native to semi-arid areas of southern Texas and Tamaulipas, Mexico. The plant is named after Walker, an amateur botanist, who collected the plants in 1940 near Mission and La Joya, Texas. The plant, which is notable for its shapely leaves, is closely related to the cassava, a member of the spurge family. Intensive efforts are under way to protect and regenerate this endangered species.
