Precopulatory mate guarding affects predation risk in two freshwater amphipod species

Article Abstract:

The study investigated whether precopulatory mate guarding increases an individual's predation risk for two freshwater amphipod species within the Hyalella azteca species complex that experience different predators. It is noted that when larval dragonflies, Anax junius and Tamea lacerata, were used as predators in laboratory trials, single, unpaired individuals were more likely to be consumed than paired individuals.

Green nesting material has a function in mate attraction in the European starling

Article Abstract:

Three hypotheses relating to the function of fresh green nest material are tested in the European starling, Sturnus vulgaris, in the field. It was suggested that fresh green nest material reduces the number of ectoparasites in nests and on nestlings, or is used by males to signal condition and paternal quality or is used as a sexually selected ornament to attract females.

Transfer experiments of Seychelles warblers to new islands: changes in dispersal and helping behaviour

Article Abstract:

A study of the breeding behavior of Seychelles warblers revealed direct correlations between territorial quality and their fitness, survival and reproductive success. Delayed dispersion and cooperative breeding were strategies employed by this species in territories with poor prey availability, wherein individual reproduction is limited.
