Predicting Plant Extinction Based on Species-Area Curves in Prairie Fragments with High Beta Richness

Article Abstract:

Iowa tallgrass prairies were used as a guide for assessing plant species richness in prairie fragments. Results indicate that plant conservation may be enhanced by protecting various prairie types instead of protecting large areas that only contain one prairie type.

Higher Taxa as Surrogates of Plant Biodiversity in a Megadiverse Country

Article Abstract:

The surrogate method is found to be a valuable tool in selecting and planning conservation areas for vascular plants, particularly in megadiverse countries. More than 100 flora inventories throughout Mexico were used to assess the method.

Conservation of Species in Dynamic Landscapes: Divergent Fates of Silene tatarica Populations in Riparian Habitats

Article Abstract:

Conservation strategies for the rare perennial plant Silene tatarica in varied riparian habitats are presented. These focus on management of natural disturbance dynamics and the presence of open habitats for colonization.
