Predictors of fertilization in the Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica

Article Abstract:

Female behaviour and male-female copulation combination predict the success of fertilization in the Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica. Forced copulation between a male and female does not lower the production of fertile eggs. The fertilization rate is predictable if the same female and male copulate but remains unpredictable if the male mates with different females. During the episode of insemination, the occurrence of a hard-shelled egg in the uterus does not harm the fertilization process.

Affiliative preferences are stable and predict mate choices in both sexes of Japanese quail. Coturnix japonica

Article Abstract:

Studies of Japanese quail have shown that females are more likely to affiliate with male quails that they have observed mating, while male quails are less likely to affiliate with females observed mating. A new study has found that quails of both sexes are consistent in selecting quails of the opposite sex, though not the same sex. The quail of both sexes are also more likely to choose partners for copulation in line with affiliative preferences.

Effect of female brooding behaviour on male mate choice in Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted on female Japanese quail to determine the effect of brooding behavior on female reproductive status. Findings indicate that brooding females are less likely to attract males.
