The author recommends that research and analyzing conservation data should precede site selection, addressing issues such as spending, biogeography, and threat levels. Sites should also be viewed as components of a network instead of stand-alone projects.

Article Abstract:
Patterns of global conservation spending are presented and analyzed. Mismatches and gaps found between conservation priorities and levels of spending indicate that more explicit delineation of priorities is needed.
