Radiotelescopes face costs of complexity
Article Abstract:
The Radiation Systems Inc., Virginia has claimed 21 million dollars from the the US National Science Foundation, for additional costs incurred in the construction of two complex radiotelescopes. The projects involved are the construction of the radiotelescope at Green Bank, West Virginia and the upgrading of the radiotelescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico. The shape of the dish at Green Bank and engineering problems at Arecibo were responsible for the increased costs.

NASA tells physicists to aim for the stars
Article Abstract:
NASA administrator Dan Goldin's suggestion that the next generation of instruments for space exploration should be built in space, has lead to fierce debate amongst physicists. Fermilab has recently dedicated a new main injector to the Tevatron, and must now develop a case for a new accelerator based on the ground. However Goldin's main aim was to show NASA's committment to investing in physics in space.

Report to Congress 'ducks major issues'
Article Abstract:
The US Congress should offer stable and substantial funding for scientific research, with a priority on fundamental research, according to a science policy document prepared for Newt Gingrich, chairman of the House of Representatives, by Vernon Ehlers. However Gingrich believes that the document only scratches the surface and would have preferred a more radical set of proposals.
