Reintroduction and postrelease movements of red-cockaded woodpecker groups in eastern Texas

Article Abstract:

Red-cockaded woodpeckers are an endangered species and can be affected by demographic isolation. One way of tackling this problem is to introduce pairs of subadult woodpeckers into habitats that are not occupied by the species. A project to release woodpeckers in eastern Texas shows that this technique is effective in reestablishing breeding units. The formation of new woodpecker pairs can be increased by reintroducing pairs in such a way that the density allows for social contact between clusters that already exist and between the adjacent pairs.

Estimate of habitat selection for central-place foraging animals

Article Abstract:

Biological conservation includes assessments of the impact of habitat modification, and habitat selection is a key area for research. Analyses of habitat use tend to rely on null models comparisons, and this may imply that habitat use does not have a spatial context. Some species return to central locations on a regular basis, and distance-based models may be more appropriate in these cases. Distance-based models have been found to be superior to non-spatial models using field data for red-cockaded woodpeckers and northern spotted owls.

Spacing behavior of the middle spotted woodpecker in central Europe

Article Abstract:

Research describing the spacial requirements of the middle spotted woodpecker in lowland oak forest is presented. Radio tracking methods show that the woodpecker defends exclusive territories in spring but not winter.
