Reproductive behaviour and operational sex ratio in Richardson's ground squirrels
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the activity budgeting, space utilization and social interactions of Richardson's ground squirrels during the mating season was conducted to determine possible differences between males and females. Results showed that the mating season is stressful for males since they spend most of their time defending territories and positioning themselves in proximity to the females. The situation for males intensifies in situations when the operational sex ratio is less male-biased.

Mating tactics of male Cape ground squirrels, Xerus inauris: consequences of year-round breeding
Article Abstract:
The mating strategy of male Cape ground squirrels, Xerus inauris, was studied to elucidate how they get access to mates and determine the influence of scattered female receptivity on male mating success. Female breeding was found to be very erratic, with a 10:1 mean operational sex ratio during oestrus. On the other hand, the projected high levels of aggression were not evident, with competition exemplified by periodic copulations, disruptions of mating and competitive searching.

Why do male Cape ground squirrels live in groups?
Article Abstract:
The mechanisms of male grouping were analyzed in male Xerus inaurius Cape ground squirrels to determine the functions of sociality in animals. The degree of sociality among male Cape ground squirrels was significantly influenced by the onset of oestrus in females. Male grouping also persisted after the breeding period among Cape ground squirrels due to its beneficial effects on survival which outweighed the costs of reproductive competition.
