Research council takes stake in start-up

Article Abstract:

The British Medical Research Council and Cancer Research Campaign have provided the start-up company Therexsys with the use of their facilities in exchange for equity shares in the company. Therexsys was created to use gene therapy technology venture capital research funds and is thought to be working on inserting genes into cells to fight tumours and other diseases. Previous venture efforts by the Council have not provided any benefit, but the Council expects to profit from this new venture arrangement.

UK universities urged to join forces to boost research

Article Abstract:

The British government has suggested more collaboration between the country's universities to boost world-class research and expand access to state-of-the-art research equipment. The suggestion stemmed from a paper submitted by the Dept. of Education. Sir Ron Dearing is chairing a commission to look into issues such as financing of universities, enrollment at universities and cost of university education.
