Revealing the world of RNA interference

Article Abstract:

The progress in understanding the mechanisms that underlie RNA-mediated gene regulation in plants and animals is presented and the efforts to harness this mechanism as a research tool and potential therapy is detailed. RNA interference is used as a research tool to control the expression of specific genes in numerous experimental organisms and has potential as a therapeutic strategy to reduce the expression of problem genes.

Somatic misexpression of germline P granules and enhanced RNA interference in retinoblastoma pathway mutants

Article Abstract:

A demonstration revealing that mutations in Rb pathway components enhance RNA interference (RNAi) and cause somatic cells to express genes and elaborate perinuclear structures normally limited to germlike-specific P granules is presented. The findings suggest that mutations in Rb pathway components cause cells to revert to patterns of gene expression normally restricted to germ cells.

A conserved siRNA-degrading RNase negatively regulates RNA interference in C. elegans

Article Abstract:

The double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) is cleaved into short interfering RNAs (siRNAs), which hybridize to homologous mRNAs and induce their degradation. In many organisms, introducing dsRNA causes the degradation of messenger RNA that is homologous to the trigger dsRNA.
