Science searches shift up a gear as Google starts Scholar engine

Article Abstract:

Google has revealed a test version of a search engine 'Google Scholar' aimed specifically academic material created by Anurag Acharya, an Indian born computer scientist. The engine searches only research publications such as journal articles, books, and most pertinent articles at the top of its searches by means of algorithms similar to those used by the firm's conventional web search.

Financial crisis faced by flagship publisher for open-access publishing movement, The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is presented. An analysis of the company's accounts reveals that the company falls far short of its stated goal of quickly breaking even.

Business backlash kills off software meeting
