Scientists criticize DOE work on nuclear repository site
Article Abstract:
A National Academy of Sciences panel of scientists complained in a Mar 1993 letter to the Dept of Energy (DOE) that DOE disregarded the panel's Apr 1992 report on the proposed Yucca Mountain, NV site for storing radioactive waste from civilian nuclear power stations. The panel had suggested several steps for ensuring the long-term safety of the site including the building of a ramp to allow scientists to inspect the mountain's interior. Though not opposed to the proposed site, the group argues that more should be known about the mountain's hydrogeology.

US immigration moves raise fears over ease of entry for scientists
Article Abstract:
A bill about legal employment-based immigration, if passed by the Congress, will make it difficult for US companies and universities to employ foreign researchers. Republican Lamar Smith's bill will reduce the number of employment-based immigration visas from current level of 140,000 a year to 135,000. The universities and companies will have to demonstrate that no US nationals are qualified for the job. The bill also changes the categories under which foreigners seeking job in the US can be admitted.
