Seasonal prediction of hurricane activity reaching the coast of the United States

Article Abstract:

A statistical model that uses July wind anomalies between 1950 and 2003 to predict with significant and useful skill the wind energy of US landfalling hurricanes for the following main hurricane season is presented. It is found that the wind anomalies in North America and east Pacific and North Atlantic Ocean regions are indicative of atmospheric circulation patterns that either favor or hinder evolving hurricanes from reaching US shores.

Two new carnivores from an unusual late tertiary forest biota in eastern North America

Article Abstract:

A new genus and species of the red panda, Pristinailurus bristoli and a new species among the fauna of Eurasian badger, Arctomeles dimolodontus are recovered. Cladistical analyses of the two new carnivores suggest immigration events and close faunal affinities between eastern North America and eastern Asia in the late Tertiary period are consistent with the contemporaneous botanical record.

A lamprey from the cretaceous Jehol biota of China

Article Abstract:

Freshwater lamprey 'Mesomyzon mengae' from the Early Cretaceous epoch (about 125 million years ago) of Inner Mongolia, China is described. Findings indicate not only Mesomyzon's closer relationship to extant lampreys but also reveals the group's invasion into a freshwater environment no later than the Early Cretaceous.
