Seeds of concern

Article Abstract:

The worries about the environmental threats to human health have centered on the positive induction of cancers and the risks to the male germ line, both real and potential, are also causing disquiet. The rapid expansion of chemicals industry in both the developed and developing worlds has resulted in the release of a plethora of xenobiotics into the environment that may affect the reproductive system, particularly in the male.

Activation of nitric oxide synthase in endothelial cells by Akt-dependent phosphorylation

Article Abstract:

The production of nitric oxide (NO) by the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) is fundamental in determining cardiovascular homeostasis. Viscous drag is an important stimulus for continued formation of NO. It is shown that the serine/threonine protein kinase Akt/PKB controls the activation of eNOS, resulting in increased NO production. This represents a novel Ca(super2+)-independent regulatory mechanism for eNOS activation.

NO is necessary and sufficient for egg activation at fertilization

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the influence of nitric oxide in the activation of eggs at fertilization. The use of nitric oxide related bioactivity in the treatment of male infertility is discussed.
