Self-fertilization strategy in an orchid

Article Abstract:

A new type of self-pollination mechanism in the tree-living orchid Holcoglossum amesianum unaided by any pollinating agent or medium is described. The 1,911 flowers of Holcoglossum amesianum, observed over three flowering seasons in ten different populations, were found to have used the same pollination strategy.

S-RNase uptake by compatible pollen tubes in gametophytic self-incompatibility

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the self-incompatibility mechanism which exists in plants and which prevents inbreeding. The accumulation of S-RNase to stop the growth of pollen tubes in the style is discussed.
