Signal-receiver interplay in the communication of male condition by Asian elephants

Article Abstract:

A comparison of the potential signal value of musth, the annual period of raised aggressiveness towards other males seen in adult male Asian elephants, and nonmusth male urine to conspecific Asian female elephants indicates that female Asian elephants have heightened chemotactile responses to urine from a male in musth compared with nonmusth males. There is a relatively high level of check and place response to musth urine from females in their luteal (sexually inactive) phase.

Oestrous state dynamics in chemical communication by captive female Asian elephants

Article Abstract:

The chemosensory responses, first by four captive female Asian elephants, Elephas maximus, over their oestrous cycles to familiar follicular and luteal phase urine are examined. The influence of the receiverEs reproductive status on response levels is further examined.

Male African elephants, Loxodonta africana, can distinguish oestrous status via urinary signals

Article Abstract:

Perception of male African elephants in sensing urinary signals of female elephants as a prelude to mating behavior is examined.
